It was back in 1999 in the 4A OSAA playoffs when the Lava Bears last faced PIL opponent, Jefferson of Portland. Back then the Democrats were talented, big and fast with three Divison 1 ball players to boast. That year the Lava Bears came out on top after a great running performance by Tailback Andy Michealis and tough defense lead by Doug and Todd Cox at Linebackers. This years Jefferson team is loaded with, again, four D-1 athletes. The difference is the Demos of 2010 are returning 9 players from their 2009 5A State Runner-up team, and are preseason favorites to repeat that appearance as well. What a great opportunity the Lava Bears have to face yet another great opponent!

The young Lava Bears played inspired football last Friday night, as they did not back down from the Warriors of Lebanon. Although the contest was lost, it was clear the Lava Bears felt good about their performance, they just ran out of time to finish the job. It was a great game, and both teams played tough, aggressive football. Our hats are off to Lebanon, and we wish them well the rest of the season.

So, it's off to Portland for the Lava Bears for game #2. The 2010 schedule once again, will test the young Lava Bears and their resolve. The lessons learned are valuable and the risks taken will reap many rewards. We hope you make the trip to Portland this Friday. If not, we will be televised live on the internet again.
